Canada’s national tennis team secured a spot in the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers by triumphing over Mexico in the Group A playoffs held at Club Sonoma. Victoria Mboko from Toronto dominated Renata Zarazua 6-1, 6-1 in just 53 minutes. Additionally, Carson Branstine, a dual citizen of the United States and Canada hailing from Montreal, defeated Julia Garcia 6-3, 7-6 to clinch the decisive victory.
Had Canada lost one of the singles matches, they would have been forced into a must-win doubles match where Gabriela Dabrowski from Ottawa and Mboko were scheduled to face Giuliana Olmos and Zarazua.
The road to victory began with Canada’s 2-1 win over Denmark, setting the stage for the winner-takes-all match against Mexico. Mexico had previously defeated Denmark 2-1.
Carson Branstine kickstarted the showdown against Mexico with a strong performance, securing a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory over Julia Garcia. Branstine, who switched nationalities from the United States to Canada in 2017, displayed remarkable skill during the match, winning in one hour and 39 minutes.
During the match, Branstine delivered one ace, faced three double faults, saved 3-of-4 break points, and won 2-of-5 break points. She maintained a 65% serve success rate and won 2-of-10 return games. On the other hand, Garcia managed two aces, no double faults, saved 3-of-5 break points, won 1-of-11 break points, and only secured 1-of-11 return games.
“I was a bit nervous heading into the match,” admitted Branstine. “It was my first tie, and I hadn’t played much tennis in the past month due to a hamstring injury. However, I executed well, had a great time, and secured the win.”
Victoria Mboko, on the other hand, concluded her match with five aces, three double faults, and five break point conversions. The young Canadian excelled by winning 89% of her first-serve points, all her service games, and five of seven return games.
“It was a tough match today,” expressed Mboko. “Playing against a talented opponent in their home country is always challenging. I’m pleased I could focus and secure the win for the team.”
