Céline Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris by sharing more insights into her health challenges and treatment journey. The renowned Canadian artist recently opened up in an exclusive interview with Harper’s Bazaar, revealing that she had been experiencing symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before receiving an official diagnosis in 2022.

The debilitating pain, which intensified in 2020, often left Dion struggling to walk on certain days and necessitated high doses of Valium for relief. Stiff person syndrome is a rare neurological autoimmune disorder characterized by progressive symptoms such as muscle rigidity and painful spasms that can be triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements.

Prior to her diagnosis, Dion would attribute show cancellations to mild reasons like a cough or sinus infection, concealing the true extent of her suffering from her fans. She expressed feeling a sense of dishonesty towards her supporters, whose unwavering encouragement enabled her to seek extensive treatment.

Following her diagnosis, Dion made the difficult decision to cancel all remaining performances. While she has not graced the stage since the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, she is set to make a comeback in September. Dion has been diligently adhering to a rigorous recovery routine involving medication, physical therapy, vocal exercises, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she has been dedicating herself to 90-minute Pilates sessions thrice a week and ballet classes twice a week in preparation for her upcoming shows.

Describing Dion as someone always on the move, the Harper’s story portrayed her fear of stillness, lest she experiences stiffness again. The singer views her recovery and the prospect of performing again as a miraculous opportunity that she deeply values and appreciates.

Looking ahead, Dion expressed a mix of strength, excitement, and nervousness as she readies herself for her Paris residency, which is scheduled to feature 26 concerts from September 12 to May 29 next year.
