Wildfires have caused devastation in central and southern Chile, resulting in at least 18 fatalities, vast forest destruction, and the loss of hundreds of homes amid a severe heat wave. President Gabriel Boric has declared a state of catastrophe in the Biobio and Ñuble regions, allowing for the suspension of constitutional rights and enhanced military coordination to combat over two dozen active fires that have consumed 8,500 hectares of land.

During a press conference in Concepcion, Boric expressed condolences to the affected families, acknowledging the preliminary count of 18 casualties and 300 homes destroyed, with expectations of these numbers rising as the full extent of the damage unfolds. He indicated that over 1,000 homes in the Biobio region alone have been impacted by the wildfires.

Firefighters faced challenges in containing the blazes due to intense heat and strong winds, with temperatures exceeding 38°C on Sunday. Interior Minister Alvaro Elizalde warned of continued extreme weather conditions, prolonging the threat posed by the fires. Residents recounted being caught off guard by the sudden fires, leading to evacuations and tragic losses.

The wildfires in Chile are a recurring summer occurrence, exacerbated by high temperatures and prolonged drought conditions. In neighboring Argentina, similar challenges are being faced as wildfires spread across the Patagonia region due to hot and dry weather conditions.
