China’s highly anticipated annual CCTV Spring Festival gala was a platform for showcasing the nation’s advanced industrial strategy and Beijing’s determination to lead in humanoid robots and the future of manufacturing. During the event, four emerging humanoid robot startups – Unitree Robotics, Galbot, Noetix, and MagicLab – presented their innovations, drawing parallels to the significance of the Super Bowl in the United States.

The gala’s initial segments prominently featured humanoid robots, with a captivating martial arts display featuring over a dozen Unitree humanoids performing intricate fight sequences alongside human child performers. The choreography included a technically challenging emulation of China’s “drunken boxing” martial arts style, highlighting advancements in multi-robot coordination and fault recovery capabilities.

Additionally, Bytedance’s AI chatbot Doubao was showcased in the opening act, while Noetix humanoid robots engaged in a comedy skit with human actors, and MagicLab robots delivered a synchronized dance performance to the tune of “We Are Made in China.”

The buzz surrounding China’s humanoid robot industry coincides with major players like AgiBot and Unitree gearing up for initial public offerings this year. Moreover, domestic AI startups are unveiling cutting-edge models during the lucrative Lunar New Year holiday period.

President Xi Jinping’s engagement with robotics startups, including meeting Unitree’s founder, underscores the sector’s increasing visibility. Xi’s interactions with robotics entrepreneurs mirror his engagements with electric vehicle and semiconductor industry leaders, signaling strong support for technological advancements.

China’s dominance in humanoid robots was evident last year when 16 full-size Unitree humanoids captivated audiences with their synchronized performances. The country’s emphasis on robotics and AI aligns with its next-generation manufacturing strategy, leveraging automation to counter challenges posed by an aging workforce.

Chinese companies accounted for a significant portion of global humanoid robot shipments in the past year, outpacing U.S. competitors. Projections indicate a substantial increase in China’s humanoid robot sales, with industry experts recognizing the nation’s prowess in AI, hardware supply chain, and manufacturing ambition.

Elon Musk’s acknowledgment of Chinese companies as formidable competitors underscores the country’s technological prowess. As China continues to push boundaries in robotics and AI, the gala serves as a testament to Beijing’s technological aspirations, offering participating companies substantial government support, investor attention, and market opportunities.
