After enduring months of escalating fuel costs, several churches in St. John’s are facing financial strain due to exorbitant oil bills necessary for heating their expansive premises. The escalating expenses are depleting their budgets and limiting available choices.

Jonathan Stevenson, the board chair at Gower Street United Church, revealed that this year’s oil bill has surpassed expectations by approximately 40 percent, leading to a direct impact on the budget. Stevenson expressed that they have exhausted most avenues for cost-cutting and are now contemplating renting out the sanctuary to alleviate the financial burden.

Meanwhile, at St. Teresa’s Parish, Pastor Ciro Perez highlighted that their oil bills have surged by $7,000 compared to the same period last year, creating significant challenges for the church. Perez emphasized the difficulty posed by the substantial space that requires substantial oil usage. The church aims to transition to electric heating, but the hefty $600,000 price tag remains a financial hurdle.

The Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is embarking on a substantial endeavor to switch to electrical heating, necessitating an investment of approximately a million dollars. The Very Reverend Roger Whalen underscored the necessity of this move, citing the urgent need to either upgrade the aging system or opt for electric heating. However, Whalen lamented that the church missed out on potential oil rebate programs that could have defrayed costs. Although previous government grants could have been beneficial, they are no longer available, though rebates are offered to homeowners making the switch to electric heating.

Whalen acknowledged the longstanding challenge of volatile oil bills at the cathedral, at times escalating by up to $30,000 annually, with typical bills hovering around $70,000. The recent shift to a lower-grade oil has mitigated current expenses, with Whalen expressing optimism about escaping the unpredictability associated with oil prices.

While the Anglican Cathedral is forging ahead with the transition, Gower Street United Church has no immediate plans for conversion, signaling a challenging financial year ahead. Stevenson emphasized the detrimental impact of oil price fluctuations, highlighting the inability to effectively strategize due to the volatile nature of the market.
