Wildlife enthusiast Mike Reece had an unexpected encounter with a black bear while exploring Fish Creek Provincial Park for owls. Reece was taken aback when he spotted the bear just a few feet away, prompting the bear to swiftly retreat towards the river upon noticing Reece.

Determined to avoid another run-in with the bear, Reece turned back but soon found himself face to face with the bear again near a beaver dam. The bear was seen climbing logs and fishing, while nearby beavers reacted by aggressively slapping their tails.

Reflecting on the experience, Reece emphasized the importance of carrying bear spray for future outings in Fish Creek. According to Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services (FWES), several reports have been received about the juvenile black bear sightings in the park since June 16, particularly in areas like Marshall Springs, Votier’s Flats, and Bebo Grove.

FWES confirmed that there have been no reports of aggressive behavior from the bear or indications of it accessing unnatural food sources. Calgary wildlife expert Sara Jordan-McLachlan mentioned that black bear sightings in and around Fish Creek are relatively common due to the area’s abundant food sources and wildlife corridor.

While the City of Calgary does not track bear sightings directly, 11 neighborhoods in the southwest quadrant are known to be frequented by bears. Last year, FWES relocated two captured bears from Calgary. Jordan-McLachlan advised caution when encountering bears, suggesting staying on designated trails to avoid surprising them and potentially provoking a defensive response.

Although the bear is generally non-aggressive, Jordan-McLachlan warned against actively seeking out the bear, as it may feel cornered and react aggressively if approached. It is crucial for people to be bear-aware and avoid provoking defensive behavior from wildlife.
