The Canadian curling trials, a significant event leading up to the Winter Olympics, are set to kick off in Halifax this weekend. Eight top men’s and women’s teams will vie for the opportunity to represent Canada in the upcoming four-player curling events in northern Italy this February. Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant secured Canada’s spot in the mixed doubles event with their sixth-place finish at the world championships.

Both men’s and women’s trials will commence on Saturday at the same venue, starting with a round-robin format. The team with the best record will advance directly to the final, while the second- and third-place teams will compete in a semifinal to determine the finalist who will face the top seed.

In a departure from past trials, the final will be a best-of-three series instead of a single game, with the finals slated for the following Friday and Saturday, and potential decisive matches on Sunday.

The successful team will aim to revitalize Canada’s Olympic curling legacy, which has seen a decline since the 2014 Games. Notably, Brad Gushue’s bronze in 2022 marks Canada’s sole medal in the four-person events since the sweep in Russia. Despite the star power of skips like Gushue, Jennifer Jones, Rachel Homan, and Kevin Koe, half of Canada’s Olympic quartets in recent years failed to make the playoffs.

In the mixed doubles discipline, Canada’s performance has been mixed, with a gold in 2018 by Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris but missing the playoffs in 2022. Shoreview Sports Analytics conducted a statistical analysis using the Bradley-Terry model to determine the most likely teams to secure Olympic berths.

The women’s event heavily favors Rachel Homan’s team, highlighting their dominant streak in global and domestic competitions. Conversely, the men’s trials present a more open field with Brad Jacobs and Matt Dunstone emerging as key contenders. The trials are poised to offer intense competition and potential upsets, promising an exciting conclusion to determine Canada’s representatives at the Winter Olympics.
