Disney+ has given the green light for a brand-new Darkwing Duck series, 35 years after the original show first aired. The revamped storyline introduces Darkwing Duck trapped in an alternate world where his heroic deeds are unknown. A young rebel named Duckie, well-versed in Darkwing’s past adventures, appears to persuade the ego-driven superhero to resume his crime-fighting duties.
Although the plot is fresh, it was crafted in collaboration with Tad Stones, the creator of the original series. Some beloved characters from the classic franchise are making a comeback, with iconic personalities lending their voices.
Mark Hamill will portray Drake Mallard, alias Darkwing Duck, who safeguards the city of St. Canard and is renowned as the Terror that Flaps in the Night. The announcement of the series reboot on Instagram sparked mixed reactions from fans, particularly concerning the replacement of the original voice actor, Jim Cummings.
Seth Rogen from Canada will voice Darkwing’s scatterbrained sidekick, Launchpad McQuack, while Lizzy Caplan takes on the role of Gosalyn Mallard, Darkwing’s adopted daughter. Venezuelan American actress Lilimar Hernandez, known for voicing Valentina (Val) Ortiz in Inside Out 2, will portray the new character Duckie.
The original Darkwing Duck premiered on the Disney Channel in 1991, running for 91 episodes and earning an Emmy nomination. The crime-fighting duck also made appearances in Nintendo NES and Game Boy video games.
Rogen’s production company, Point Grey Pictures, responsible for a recent special episode of The Muppet Show on Disney+, is set to produce the new Darkwing Duck series. The Point Grey team embraced the character’s catchphrase in a statement, expressing excitement for the collaboration with Disney.
