A well-established mine in the Northwest Territories is ceasing operations and embarking on a new chapter focused on remediation efforts. The Diavik diamond mine, situated approximately 300 kilometers northeast of Yellowknife, has been in operation for many years, producing over 150 million carats of diamonds, as reported by its owner Rio Tinto. Recently, the mine permanently closed its doors.

Throughout its existence, the mine provided employment to hundreds of individuals, with over 1,000 workers at its peak. While not all employees hailed from the region, some, like Sean Sinclair, who originally comes from Ontario, have made the Northwest Territories their home. Sinclair, who joined Diavik while pursuing his master’s degree, has progressed to become a closure manager at the mine.

In a similar sentiment, other workers at the mine, such as Mike Lowing, the principal adviser for health, safety, and environment, expressed their attachment to Yellowknife, where they have resided for several years. Despite the closure of the Diavik mine affecting various communities in the region, the future holds promise with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent announcement of a substantial $35-billion investment plan for the North. This plan includes support for projects like the Mackenzie Valley Highway and the Taltson hydro expansion, offering potential employment opportunities for workers like Lowing.

While the closure of the Diavik mine marks the end of an era, individuals like Alex Clinton, a senior adviser at Diavik, believe that mining activities should continue in the region. Clinton, a longtime resident of Yellowknife, sees great potential in focusing on gold mining due to the increasing demand for the precious metal. Notably, a new winter road near Yellowknife is set to facilitate the reopening of the Mon Mine by Sixty North Gold, signaling a resurgence in gold mining activities in the area.

With gold prices reaching record highs, Clinton remains optimistic about the future of mining in the Northwest Territories. He envisions a thriving industry where his children can also find opportunities, mirroring his own career path and dedication to the region.
