Edmonton is experiencing its wettest June on record, with a total of 262 millimeters of rain as of Sunday, according to meteorologists from Environment Canada. This surpasses the previous June rainfall record of 217 mm set in 1914.
The city has seen over triple its average June rainfall, which typically sits at less than 79 mm. The record-breaking rainfall was further heightened by 57 mm of rain over the weekend, bringing the city close to breaking the all-time monthly rainfall record.
Meteorologists predict more showers leading into the July long weekend, potentially making this the second wettest month in Edmonton’s history. The wettest month ever recorded in the city was July 1901, with 283 mm of rain.
Environment Canada is still assessing the total rainfall and storm damage from recent days. The forecast indicates a 30% chance of showers and potential thunderstorms in the coming days, with a severe thunderstorm watch issued for Edmonton and east-central Alberta. This watch is due to conditions favorable for storms capable of producing damaging hail, wind, or rain.
