Education Minister Paul Calandra has issued a warning to an Ontario school board, stating that if they do not reinstate prom plans for three high schools that recently canceled them, he will take action to ensure the events proceed. The decision to cancel the traditional proms at three schools within the Durham District School Board was made by the principals, citing increasing liabilities and risks associated with organizing such events.

Following the announcement, students expressed frustration and disappointment at the prospect of missing out on a time-honored celebration. Minister Calandra emphasized the significance of prom as a milestone event that should be carried out safely, urging school boards to prioritize the well-being of students and educators in their decision-making processes.

Highlighting the importance of allowing students to enjoy their youth, Calandra stressed the need for school boards to consider the interests of students above all else. He mentioned ongoing efforts to reform board governance, particularly focusing on the role of trustees in ensuring student-centered policies.

The minister hinted at potential legislative changes that would grant him increased authority to intervene in school board matters, including the ability to supervise boards more effectively. This could extend to addressing issues related to prom cancellations, should the need arise.

The Durham District School Board has yet to respond to requests for comment on the situation. Earlier, the principals of Brooklin, Brock, and Uxbridge high schools, part of the same board, jointly announced the cancellation of proms. They assured parents that while the traditional events were called off, efforts would be made to organize alternative inclusive and meaningful year-end activities that prioritize safety and a sense of community.
