A food bank in Moosomin was pleasantly surprised by a significant donation of eggs early in the morning. The Moosomin Food Share, operated by the Southeast Health Ability Society, received over 25,000 cartons of eggs at around 9 a.m. CST on Tuesday.
Samantha Campbell, the manager of Moosomin Food Share, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from volunteers who tirelessly unloaded the trailer and managed the distribution of the eggs. The generosity came from Second Harvest, a food rescue organization, which received the eggs from the Egg Farmers of Canada, an association overseeing egg production in several provinces.
Winston Rosser, the vice-president of food rescue at Second Harvest, explained that surplus eggs from grading facilities across the country are distributed to charitable organizations like Moosomin Food Share. This collaboration has previously involved large donations of items such as potatoes and tomatoes.
Campbell mentioned that the food bank aims to distribute almost the entire egg shipment within 24 hours. Typically, they coordinate with local schools, daycares, and community groups to efficiently distribute the food donations they receive. Despite the chilly weather, efforts to distribute the eggs swiftly and effectively were ongoing.
Rosser highlighted that this partnership with Egg Farmers of Canada in Saskatchewan marks a significant milestone for Second Harvest in spreading surplus resources to partners in the region.
