Electronic Arts, a renowned video game publisher, has made the decision to close down BioWare, a well-known game development studio based in Edmonton, after more than 30 years of operation. This closure was officially announced by BioWare on social media, following a report by Bloomberg that indicated the company is laying off 400 employees, including approximately 50 from the BioWare team. Additionally, it was confirmed that the highly anticipated fifth installment of the Mass Effect series, which has been a fan favorite since 2007, has been canceled.
Established in 1995, BioWare was acquired by Electronic Arts (EA) in 2007. Co-founder of BioWare, Trent Oster, expressed his sentiment about the closure in an interview with CBC Radio, stating, “It’s a pretty sad day. I mean, 30 plus years ago we built something I think was pretty awesome. And it’s pretty sad to see the end of the dream.”
The acquisition of Electronic Arts by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund PIF, investment firm Silver Lake Partners, and Affinity Partners, led by Jared Kushner, was recently finalized for $55 billion US dollars. Despite attempts to reach out for comments, representatives from EA did not respond immediately to inquiries regarding the layoffs.
BioWare, known for its immersive role-playing games like Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Mass Effect, has left a lasting impact on the gaming industry. Although the studio experienced significant growth over the years, including a shift towards multiplayer games like 2019’s Anthem, they struggled to maintain the same level of success as their single-player narrative-driven titles.
Recent releases, such as 2017’s Mass Effect: Andromeda and 2024’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard, received mixed reviews and failed to meet the expectations of many fans. Despite ongoing development on a new Mass Effect installment, BioWare’s shutdown has put an end to this project.
Reflecting on the journey of BioWare, Trent Oster, now the CEO of gaming company Beamdog, reminisced about the company’s evolution, from a small group to a global player in the gaming industry. He acknowledged the studio’s transformation and growth, emphasizing the remarkable experience it had provided.
The closure of BioWare marks the end of an era for a company that has significantly contributed to the gaming world, leaving behind a legacy of beloved titles and memorable gaming experiences.
