The inaugural Asian edition of the renowned music event Eurovision is set to take place in Bangkok later this year.

Organizers have confirmed the participation of at least 10 countries from Asia, including Thailand, South Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. More countries are anticipated to join before the grand finale in November.

“As we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Eurovision Song Contest, launching this new chapter in Asia holds significant meaning, given the region’s abundant cultural richness, creativity, and talent,” stated Martin Green, the contest’s director, in the announcement released on Tuesday.

Highlighting Bangkok’s vibrant cultural melting pot, Chuwit Sirivajjakul from the Thailand Tourism Authority expressed, “Bangkok has always been a hub for diverse cultures, resonating with music and embodying a spirit of celebration in everyday life.”

The primary event, managed by the European Broadcasting Union, garners an audience of over 100 million viewers annually.

In this week’s federal budget, the Carney government revealed its desire to get Canada into the international singing competition. In an interview with Amy Smith, Eurovision expert Karen Fricker explains why she thinks the government wants in.

The upcoming main Eurovision competition featuring 35 participating countries is scheduled to be held in Vienna in May. Notably, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Spain have decided to boycott the event due to disagreements regarding Israel’s involvement.

Despite its aim to prioritize pop music over politics, the Eurovision Song Contest has been entangled in various global issues. In 2022, Russia was expelled from the contest following its military intervention in Ukraine.

The event has also faced challenges stemming from the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, leading to demonstrations outside the venues and necessitating stricter regulations against political displays.

Similar tensions could arise at the Eurovision Song Contest Asia, as demonstrated by the historical border conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia that erupted twice last year.
