These peachy-orange fungi, known as pyronema, are categorized as pyrophilous fungi, meaning they thrive in fire-affected environments. With the escalation of wildfires due to climate change, the study of these fungi’s impact on fire recovery has gained significance.
These fire-loving fungi remain dormant until triggered by a wildfire, as explained by Monika Fischer, a mycologist at the University of British Columbia. The past few years have seen unprecedented wildfire seasons, surpassing historical burn sizes, emphasizing the importance of understanding post-fire environments.
These fungi survive extreme heat due to soil insulation, with temperatures as high as 1,000 C on the surface during controlled burns. They ingest ash, carbon, and toxic byproducts of wildfires, converting them into spores and fruiting bodies that serve as a food source for secondary responders like insects, mites, and bacteria.
Post-fire landslides are a significant concern due to erosion after wildfires. Fungi’s threadlike filaments, called hyphae, aid in stabilizing soil and reducing landslide risks post-fire. Research indicates a strong correlation between fungal and plant community recovery post-wildfire.
