If you’ve recently hesitated over the butter, sputtered at the coffee prices, or felt a pinch in the chocolate aisle, you’re not the only one.
For over a year, food prices have been on the rise, with grocery inflation steadily increasing since April 2024, as reported by Statistics Canada. In September, shoppers spent four per cent more at the grocery store compared to the same period last year.
While overall prices have surged, certain items have significantly impacted our wallets. Beef, coffee, and confectionery have shown notable price hikes, but what factors are driving up these costs?

Coffee Takes the Lead
They say you hurt the ones you love the most, right? Well, coffee has been inflicting financial pain with its soaring prices in recent months.
Coffee prices surged by 28.6 per cent over the past year, surpassing all other food items monitored by Statistics Canada’s consumer price index. The cost of roasted or ground coffee spiked by 41 per cent in September compared to the same month last year.
According to Statistics Canada’s retail data, the average monthly price for 340 grams of roasted or ground coffee has skyrocketed by 34 per cent since January alone. For instance, a 864-gram tub of Maxwell House ground coffee was priced at $20 at Loblaws, while a 915-gram tub of Nabob Bold cost a hefty $35.99 at Sobeys.
Even Tim Hortons had to adjust its coffee prices for the first time in three years, raising the cost by around three cents per cup. This price surge is mainly attributed to record-high global coffee prices earlier this year, driven by supply issues in major producing countries like Brazil and Vietnam, along with U.S. tariffs impacting the market.
