The town in Alberta known for its rapid oil industry cycles is on the brink of a potential economic upturn. Fort McMurray is witnessing signs of growth, evidenced by surging home prices, increased investments in the oil sector, widespread recruitment, and longer queues at Tim Hortons drive-thrus.

The anticipated expansion is largely tied to a proposed new oil pipeline to the West Coast by the Alberta government. The federal government is expected to declare this project as being in the national interest shortly. William Gilbert, a roofer, foresees his business thriving in tandem with Fort McMurray’s growth. His team is working diligently to keep pace with demand, with expectations of significant expansion in the coming years.

Government initiatives over the past year, aimed at boosting oil production, have fostered a sense of optimism. These include the development of a new West Coast oil pipeline by Alberta and Ottawa, as well as the removal of certain environmental regulations and the introduction of financial incentives for investors.

The objective of the Alberta government is to double oilsands production to eight million barrels per day by 2035. After a decade of sluggish economic activity and population decline, the region is now experiencing a resurgence, leading to record-high population levels.

Dianna De Sousa, president of the local chamber of commerce, notes a threefold increase in construction activity. With housing demand up by about 30% compared to the previous year, the real estate market is thriving. However, there is a collective desire in the community for managed and gradual growth, having learned from past chaotic booms.

Despite the positive outlook, caution remains as the potential oil boom is subject to various uncertainties. Large oilsands companies have been hesitant to undertake major projects due to financial risks and changing investor priorities. Factors such as trade conflicts and volatile oil prices also pose challenges to sustained growth.

Fort McMurray continues its infrastructure development to accommodate future growth, including projects to enhance flood protection and improve connectivity. The ongoing expansion has sparked optimism among local businesses, leading to increased hiring and investment in anticipation of a more prosperous future.
