The chief of the federal public service has indicated that the government’s plan to reduce spending and increase investments will lead to the elimination of 40,000 jobs as programs are downsized or discontinued. Michael Sabia, who serves as the clerk of the Privy Council, conveyed this message in a communication to federal staff following the unveiling of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s initial budget.

In the memo, Sabia acknowledged that the government’s commitment to slashing $60 billion over a five-year period represents a significant figure that will necessitate sacrifices. He emphasized the tangible impact of this decision on individuals serving the country and their families, refraining from downplaying the repercussions.

Sabia elaborated that in order to meet the government’s objectives, certain programs will undergo reductions or restrictions in scope, while others will be completely terminated. The public service sector is expected to see a reduction of approximately 40,000 positions, including ongoing cuts already in progress. These job reductions are contingent upon the approval of the federal budget by Parliament later in the month.

Furthermore, Sabia assured that swift decisions will be made once the cuts are initiated to prevent prolonged uncertainty. Support will be provided to those affected by layoffs and early retirements to navigate the transition effectively.
