The Grey Cup game is set to make a return to Regina in 2027, marking the second time in a span of five years that the CFL final will be hosted in the capital city, which is also home to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
During the announcement on Monday, Premier Scott Moe emphasized the opportunity in 2027 to showcase the strong fan base and community pride for the Saskatchewan football team. The President of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Craig Reynolds, acknowledged the pivotal support from the City of Regina and the province in securing the 2027 Grey Cup, stating, “In Saskatchewan, we know how to do Grey Cups right.”
The City of Regina has committed $1.5 million in cash and in-kind services, including transit shuttle and police support for the Grey Cup, as confirmed by a spokesperson for Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski. Bachynski expressed confidence that both avid fans and first-time visitors will experience a warm welcome, ensuring that the 2027 Grey Cup will be a memorable event.
Notably, this will be the fifth championship held in the Queen City and the second at the new Mosaic Stadium. The upcoming 2027 game, scheduled for November 7th, will be hosted one week earlier than the usual timing. Expectations are high as the Roughriders prepare to host the Grey Cup in their home city, following their victorious home game in 2013 when they beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in front of a roaring crowd of 44,000 fans.
The 2027 Grey Cup festival will be a unique experience, as it will be entirely hosted indoors, including the street festival, a feature that intrigued CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston. Johnston praised the collaborative effort put forth by the Saskatchewan Roughriders, supported by the province, City of Regina, and local hotel operators, highlighting the outstanding quality and support of the bid package.
While the other teams submitting bid packages remain undisclosed, Johnston emphasized that the bid from Saskatchewan was exceptional and reflected the deep-rooted football culture in the province.
