Reports of brush fires in Newfoundland’s Bay de Verde Peninsula have prompted the Heart’s Content Volunteer Fire Department to enforce a fire ban in their community and New Perlican ahead of the wildfire season. Heart’s Content fire chief Kyle Piercey expressed a desire to prevent a repeat of last year’s destructive wildfires that forced evacuations and caused significant property damage in the region.

Bay Roberts Fire Rescue recently tackled a brush fire in Port de Grave that spread over a large area and approached residential areas, starting from a barrel fire that spiraled out of control. Several fire departments in Conception Bay have responded to multiple brush fires this month, some ignited by barrel fires.

In response to these incidents, Piercey implemented a fire ban after witnessing close calls in neighboring areas. The ban prohibits all brush fires and open pit fires while allowing the use of propane barbecues and fireplaces. Piercey emphasized the ban’s importance due to local weather conditions and urged those seeking to burn brush to obtain permits from the forestry department.

Reflecting on the past wildfire threat, Mayor Glenda Hiscock of Heart’s Content recalled the fear of flames approaching the town last year. She praised the dedication of volunteer firefighters who risked their lives to protect communities and emphasized the proactive measures taken this year for safety. With the upcoming wildfire season looming, Piercey stressed the importance of early action to ensure preparedness and prevent potential disasters.

The community remains apprehensive about the approaching wildfire season, prompting authorities to act swiftly to safeguard lives and properties. Hiscock highlighted the sacrifices made by firefighters last year and acknowledged the critical role of proactive measures in mitigating wildfire risks.
