Jimmy Lai, a former prominent figure in the Hong Kong media industry and a vocal critic of Beijing, faced a significant national security trial in the city’s court on Monday, potentially leading to a life sentence. The 78-year-old was found guilty by three judges appointed by the government for collaborating with foreign forces to jeopardize national security and for plotting to publish seditious articles, despite denying all allegations.

Arrested in August 2020 under a national security law imposed by Beijing after the 2019 anti-government protests, Lai has been in custody for five years and has faced multiple charges. His trial, which proceeded without a jury, has attracted international attention from the U.S., Britain, the European Union, and political analysts as a gauge of media freedom and judicial autonomy in the former British territory handed back to China in 1997.

In a statement to reporters in London, Lai’s son Sebastien expressed the family’s disappointment but lack of surprise at the verdict, emphasizing that the extensive 800-page verdict contained no substantial evidence against his father. Sebastien criticized the manipulation and weaponization of the national security law to target individuals who express dissenting views.

The court, presenting an 855-page verdict, accused Lai of persistently seeking U.S. intervention to undermine the Chinese government under the guise of assisting Hong Kong residents. Despite Lai’s legal team acknowledging his calls for sanctions before the law’s enactment, the judges concluded that Lai maintained his objective of destabilizing the ruling Communist Party, albeit in a more subtle manner.

The court labeled Lai as the “mastermind” behind the alleged conspiracies, portraying his actions as detrimental to the people of China and Hong Kong. Lai’s sentencing, scheduled for a later date, carries the possibility of a life sentence, with hearings set to commence for Lai and other defendants.

The closure of Lai’s pro-democracy publication, Apple Daily, in 2021 following police raids and asset freezes underscores the ongoing crackdown on dissenting voices in Hong Kong. Amid concerns about Lai’s health, raised during his marathon trial, his family and supporters have highlighted his deteriorating physical condition, including weight loss and various health issues.

The verdict has drawn criticism from the international community, with the U.K., the EU, and rights organizations condemning the perceived political motives behind Lai’s prosecution. In contrast, Chinese authorities defended the court’s decision, denouncing external interference in Hong Kong’s legal affairs. Despite the polarized reactions, the conclusion of Lai’s trial marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing debate over press freedom and political dissent in Hong Kong.
