Sam Neill, a versatile actor known for his roles in both art films and blockbusters such as Jurassic Park and The Piano, has passed away at the age of 78. In 2023, Neill revealed he was battling angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and he died in Sydney on Monday, as confirmed by a statement on his social media page.

His family stated that his death was sudden and unexpected, although he was cancer-free at the time. The exact cause of death was not specified, but his family mentioned that he passed away surrounded by loved ones, maintaining the dignity that defined his life.

Neill rose to prominence alongside other Australian actors and directors in the late 1970s. His diverse acting range was evident in various roles, from comedic performances like in Sweet Revenge to intense scenes in movies like Event Horizon. He portrayed iconic characters such as Damien the Antichrist in Omen III: The Final Conflict and Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in The Tudors.

The actor gained international recognition in films like My Brilliant Career and Dead Calm, where he starred alongside Meryl Streep. However, his most notable role came in 1993 as paleontologist Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, a character known for his thoughtful demeanor and scientific warnings about the dangers of mixing dinosaurs and humans.

Born in Northern Ireland in 1947, Neill moved to New Zealand at a young age. His acting career started with the film Sleeping Dogs in 1977, and he later appeared in notable movies like The Hunt for Red October and In the Mouth of Madness. On television, he portrayed characters in series such as Peaky Blinders and Sally Hemings: An American Tragedy, and more recently in Invasion and Apples Never Fall.

Aside from acting, Neill was also a successful vintner, producing wines under his Two Paddocks label in New Zealand. His memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, was released in March 2023, and he was honored with a knighthood for his significant contributions to the film industry.

Sam Neill is survived by four children and eight grandchildren.
