Fresh from the triumph of his television adaptation of “Heated Rivalry,” Jacob Tierney is embarking on a new venture inspired by Canadian literary treasure. Netflix revealed on Thursday that Tierney will be responsible for writing, directing, and executive producing “Alexander,” a series based on Annabel Lyon’s acclaimed 2009 novel, “The Golden Mean.”

Set in fourth-century BC Greece, “Alexander” delves into the dynamics when Aristotle takes on the role of tutor to the impulsive and rebellious young prince, Alexander the Great. Lyon’s novel, “The Golden Mean,” achieved international acclaim, garnering nominations for prestigious literary awards such as the Giller Prize and the Governor General’s Literary Award, and clinching the Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize.

Expressing his admiration for Lyon’s work, Tierney shared, “I fell in love with Annabel Lyon’s book ‘The Golden Mean’ years ago and have been dreaming of telling this story ever since.” Lyon disclosed that Tierney had initially approached her about adapting the novel in 2014, emphasizing his unwavering dedication to the project over the years.

Fans of “Heated Rivalry” may find this narrative familiar, as Tierney’s passion for Rachel Reid’s “Game Changers” hockey romance series led him to adapt its second installment, resulting in the successful television show. “Heated Rivalry” premiered on Crave in November and stands as the platform’s most successful original series to date, solidifying Tierney’s reputation in the TV industry.

Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of scripted for U.S. and Canadian series, expressed excitement about collaborating with Tierney on “Alexander,” hailing him as one of the most sought-after creative talents in the field. The series promises a contemporary reinterpretation of the classic mentor-protege power struggle, infused with a raw and modern vibrancy that offers both epic scale and intimate depth.

Joining the production team as executive producers are Brendan Brady, a co-producer of “Heated Rivalry,” along with Michael Costigan and Jason Bateman of Aggregate Films. Lyon will contribute in a consulting capacity to ensure the project aligns with her vision, citing Tierney’s ability to capture the essence of her characters.

Reflecting on the timing of the adaptation, Lyon remarked on the enduring relevance of themes such as ambition, love, and conflict, spanning centuries and resonating with contemporary audiences. She expressed hope that the adaptation would bridge the gap between past and present, offering a compelling narrative that speaks to the timeless aspects of human nature.
