The Liberal candidate in the Lewisporte-Twillingate district is seeking a judicial recount after narrowly losing to Progressive Conservative Mark Butt by a margin of 18 votes. Derek Bennett announced on Friday that he has filed an application with the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador.

In a statement, Bennett emphasized the importance of ensuring voter confidence in the electoral process, citing unspecified “extraordinary circumstances” on election day. He stated that further comments would be withheld until the recount is complete.

Candidates have a 10-day window post-official count to request a recount if they suspect irregularities in ballot counting. A minimum of four days’ notice is required for the recount to be scheduled by a judge.
