The reigning queen of pop is poised to reclaim her throne. Leading the pack in nominations for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards is none other than Madonna, surpassing even Taylor Swift. This marks Madonna’s third time as the most nominated artist at the VMAs, with a total of 11 nods for her acclaimed album “Confessions II” and its corresponding film.
Outshining Taylor Swift, who holds the record for the most VMAs won by a solo artist, Madonna’s nominations include top categories such as artist of the year and video of the year. Swift, on the other hand, secured nine nominations for her album “The Life of a Showgirl” and the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia.” Following closely behind Swift are Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande, each with seven nominations.
This isn’t Madonna’s first time in the spotlight at the VMAs. She previously dominated the nominations in 1990 and 1998 during her “Vogue” and “Ray of Light” eras. However, her most iconic moment at the awards may forever be linked to her groundbreaking performance at the inaugural 1984 ceremony, where she stunned audiences in a wedding dress and a “Boy Toy” belt buckle while delivering a memorable rendition of “Like a Virgin.”
Madonna’s impressive list of nominations this year includes video of the year, artist of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for “Bring Your Love,” featuring fellow nominee Sabrina Carpenter. In the highly coveted video of the year category, “Confessions” is set to compete against Swift’s “Ophelia,” as well as videos from Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Bruno Mars, and Gener8ion with Yung Lean.
For 13 categories this year, the public has the opportunity to vote for their favorites. The winners will be revealed during the live broadcast of the awards ceremony on September 27, airing on CBS, MTV, and streaming on Paramount+.
