The mastermind behind the acclaimed animated film “KPop Demon Hunters” has been honored with the key to Toronto, her hometown. Maggie Kang, a Korean-Canadian filmmaker, was surprised by Mayor Olivia Chow during a panel discussion on the film’s success at Departure Festival.

Mayor Chow commended Kang for her achievements, stating that her journey would serve as inspiration for future generations. Kang, without saying a word, graciously accepted the key and posed for photos alongside Mayor Chow and Cindy Gouveia, the president of Sheridan College, where Kang studied.

“KPop Demon Hunters,” since its debut, has broken records on Netflix as the most-watched film ever, leading to a chart-topping soundtrack and approval for a sequel. During the panel, Kang hinted at her upcoming project, expressing her commitment to creating a sequel that matches the original in quality.

Later in the day, Kang is set to be honored with the cultural innovator award at the Departure Honours gala.
