Australian band Midnight Oil made an announcement on Tuesday regarding the passing of their powerhouse drummer and co-founding member, Rob Hirst, at the age of 70. The band shared on Facebook that after a valiant battle of nearly three years, Rob had passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. They also urged donations to charities focused on pancreatic cancer research and support.

Longtime members Peter Garrett, Jim Moginie, and Martin Rotsey expressed their deep sorrow over the loss of their bandmate, stating that while words may fail them now, the music will endure.

Midnight Oil, tracing back to the early 1970s with members residing in Sydney and Canberra, gained recognition with their self-titled debut album in 1978. Their socially conscious stance was solidified with the release of “Diesel and Dust” in 1987. Rob Hirst once mentioned their penchant for tackling challenging issues head-on, reflecting on their wins and losses.

The band’s advocacy for Indigenous land rights, notably showcased in the hit “Beds Are Burning” from “Diesel and Dust,” propelled their international success. Their impactful performances, with Peter Garrett’s dynamic presence and Rob Hirst’s thunderous drumming, captivated audiences worldwide.

Albums like “Blue Sky Mining” and “Earth and Sun and Moon” further cemented their reputation, with notable tracks contributing to their diverse repertoire. Rob Hirst, recognized for his songwriting collaborations with Jim Moginie, played a significant role in shaping the band’s music.

Despite the changing music landscape, Midnight Oil persisted in releasing albums until 2002 when Peter Garrett shifted focus to politics. The band occasionally reunited for tours and new releases, with their latest album “Resist” in 2022.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and fellow musicians paid tribute to Rob Hirst, acknowledging his immense talent and enduring legacy. Hirst’s battle with cancer, his decision to auction his cherished drum kit for charity, and his reflections on Midnight Oil’s impactful journey showcased his dedication to music and advocacy up to his final days.

In late 2025, reflecting on the band’s legacy, Rob Hirst emphasized their role in advocating for justice alongside other influential artists.
