Montreal police have announced heightened vigilance and increased presence in Jewish community celebration areas throughout Hanukkah in response to a mass shooting incident in Australia. The attack at a Hanukkah event in Sydney’s Bondi Beach left fifteen people dead and at least 38 injured, with Australian authorities labeling it as a terrorist act targeting the Jewish community.

Following this tragic event, Montreal police released a statement expressing their commitment to ensuring the safety of Montreal residents. They emphasized ongoing communication with Jewish community leaders to address concerns and stated their dedication to enhancing security measures on the ground.

Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada also condemned the attack, describing it as heartbreaking and an act of violence and anti-Semitism. She confirmed discussions with SPVM Chief Fady Dagher to bolster vigilance in Montreal’s Jewish neighborhoods.

Quebec Liberal MP Anthony Housefather, a vocal advocate against antisemitism, stressed the need for amending hate laws and allocating additional resources for security in light of rising antisemitic incidents. He encouraged all Canadians to participate in Hanukkah events to show solidarity with Jewish communities and condemn such acts of hatred.

In solidarity with the affected families, the city of Côte Saint-Luc extended its condolences and pledged to prioritize the safety of its residents and communal establishments. It emphasized the importance of upholding the ability to hold peaceful community gatherings in free societies without fear.
