Montreal’s public transit system is facing imminent disruptions as two strikes are set to impact services. The transit authority is actively negotiating with unions to minimize the impact of the strikes. Despite efforts, a 24-hour strike on Nov. 1 and 2 is likely, with bus and Metro services coming to a halt.

Beginning at 4 a.m. on Saturday, services will be suspended due to the strike by the union representing drivers, Metro operators, and station agents. Additionally, 2,400 maintenance workers are scheduled to strike, leading to reduced service hours for four weeks until Nov. 28.

During the strike period, buses will operate during specific rush hour times, and night bus services will also be available for limited hours. Similarly, Metro services will run during designated hours, with night Metro service also operational.

The strike will result in the closure of Metro stations outside of service hours for safety reasons. However, adapted transit service will continue during the strike to assist commuters.

Negotiations with the maintenance workers’ union have been challenging, with unresolved issues such as wage increases and outsourcing. The transit authority is exploring various options, including appointing an arbitrator if mediation fails.

The unions have expressed concerns over the impact of the strikes and are working towards reaching agreements with the STM. The transit authority advises commuters to stay informed about any schedule changes through its website.

In response to the strikes, the STM plans to cut 300 jobs to reduce costs as they struggle to meet the demands of the unions. Despite ongoing negotiations, the situation remains uncertain, causing disruptions for commuters in Montreal.
