Police are currently investigating a break-in at a residence, reportedly owned by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder, that occurred while the NBA star was playing a game the previous night. The Thunder have deferred inquiries to the Nichols Hills police department, located north of downtown Oklahoma City, who have not disclosed the identity of the homeowner or the items stolen.
Originally hailing from Hamilton, Ont., Gilgeous-Alexander’s home was targeted around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday while the Thunder were competing against the Washington Wizards. Although law enforcement arrived after the suspects had fled, they assured the public of no imminent danger.
This incident reflects a pattern of burglaries at residences of prominent athletes across the United States, attributed to the assumption of valuable possessions within their homes. Notable athletes, such as Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Joe Burrow, Luka Doncic, and Evgeni Malkin, have fallen victim to similar break-ins.
To combat such crimes, authorities have cautioned sports leagues about the heightened risk on game days, when players are away. In response, the NBA issued a memo in November 2024 advising teams to bolster home security measures. Suggestions include installing modern alarm systems with surveillance cameras, securing valuables in safes, removing online home listings revealing interior details, hiring security services during extended absences, and employing guard dogs for added protection.
