A writer from New Brunswick will soon see her literary work showcased on the lunar surface. Jennifer Shelby’s compilation of short stories, titled “Borrowed Wings and other stories,” has been selected for inclusion in the Lunar Codex project. This initiative, part of NASA’s Artemis program, aims to create a repository of cultural works representing diverse global perspectives.

Rather than physically dropping the book on the moon’s surface, the Lunar Codex employs innovative technology to etch literary content onto metal substrates. This method allows for the storage of vast amounts of information in a compact and durable format, ensuring longevity on the lunar terrain. The brainchild behind this fusion of art and science is Samuel Peralta, a Canadian physicist and author who developed NanoFiche technology specifically for the Lunar Codex.

Peralta’s vision encompasses a wide range of artistic contributions, with works from 264 countries and territories, including 156 Indigenous nations. The Lunar Codex project operates by selling space on lunar missions to private entities interested in lunar artifacts. The use of nickel as the storage medium not only ensures longevity but also helps minimize costs, as the weight of payloads on lunar missions can be prohibitively expensive.

With ten missions planned and five already launched, the Lunar Codex continues to expand its collection of cultural artifacts. Jennifer Shelby’s inclusion in this prestigious collection is a testament to the universal appeal of her storytelling. Describing her tales as modern-day fairytales infused with magic and wonder, Shelby’s literary prowess has garnered recognition in various publications.

Despite the initial surprise of having her work selected for lunar archiving, Shelby’s excitement remains palpable as she anticipates the upcoming winter launch. Reflecting on the surreal experience of gazing at the moon from her home near the Bay of Fundy, Shelby muses about the potential impact of her stories reaching unforeseen audiences, perhaps even extraterrestrial ones.

As Shelby’s narrative prepares to embark on its lunar journey, her imaginative spirit continues to fuel new story ideas inspired by the boundless possibilities of space exploration. The convergence of art and technology in the Lunar Codex project symbolizes a harmonious blend of creativity and innovation, paving the way for cultural exchange beyond earthly confines.
