“Nighttime Ride Trend: Electric Vehicles Illuminate Canadian Cities”

Josh Hunter has been organizing nighttime rides on personal electric vehicles in Edmonton for five years, with a diverse mix of electric scooters, bicycles, skateboards, and unicycles coming together for an early season tour at the Alberta Legislature grounds on a recent Friday evening. While typically seen as affordable and eco-friendly commuting options during the day, personal electric vehicles (PEVs) are increasingly becoming a popular and social leisure activity in Canadian cities after sunset.

Although Hunter’s group, PEV Edmonton, officially kicks off its season in June, warm weather and clear skies attracted a group of enthusiastic riders ready to explore the city’s river valley pathways and streets after dark. Describing the experience as akin to a modern-day biker group, Hunter emphasized the inclusivity of all age groups, as long as riders have a personal electric vehicle and wear a helmet, which is strictly enforced as a key safety measure.

During the nighttime ride, many participants showcased their personalized PEVs adorned with vibrant lights and mirrors, proudly discussing their motor wattages. While some riders were seasoned enthusiasts, others, like Habib Baalbaki and Zeinab Awada, were newcomers enjoying a casual evening out on rental e-scooters for what they described as a “fun date idea.”

Companies offering rental e-scooters also witnessed increased activity in the evenings, with riders from Lime, Neuron, and Bird exploring the city center without a specific destination in mind. The appeal of nighttime riding was highlighted by Kyson Fitzner, who found thrill and adrenaline in cruising at night, showcasing tricks like jumping curbs to add excitement to the experience.

Data from companies operating rental e-scooter and e-bike programs in Canada indicated a significant portion of trips occurring during the evening hours, showcasing a growing trend in nighttime recreational riding. Additionally, the social aspect of shared e-scooters was emphasized, with users in some cities able to add companions to their accounts for group outings.

Beyond Edmonton, cities like Ottawa, Vancouver, and Halifax also see similar groups organizing nighttime e-vehicle rides, attracting attention from both motorists and pedestrians. Despite the fun and social aspects, safety remains a priority, with riders adopting protective gear and adhering to guidelines set by rental companies to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

As the popularity of PEVs rises, so do the risks associated with them, with a notable increase in e-scooter-related injuries reported across Canada. This has prompted a closer look at regulations and safety measures to mitigate risks and promote responsible riding practices. Despite these challenges, enthusiasts like Trevor Neufeld continue to pursue their passion for e-vehicles, highlighting the joy and excitement of exploring the city on two wheels under the night sky.
