A man from Nova Scotia was handed a sentence in Miramichi court on Tuesday for fatally ambushing another inmate in a New Brunswick prison three years ago. Christian Enang Clyke, aged 33, was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Richard King, which occurred on October 6, 2022, at the Atlantic Institution in Renous. The victim, Richard King, was a father and grandfather who was nearing his release date.
This was Clyke’s second murder conviction, as he was previously serving time for the 2011 death of Angela Hall in Dartmouth. Despite having to impose a life sentence without parole for 25 years due to his prior conviction, the court discussed the impact of Clyke’s ongoing appeal during the sentencing hearing. The Nova Scotia Court of Appeal is set to review his case in January, with the judge hoping for a decision before sentencing Clyke for the murder of King.
During the trial, evidence revealed that Clyke and King entered another inmate’s cell and a violent altercation ensued, resulting in King being stabbed multiple times. Surveillance footage captured the brutal attack, showing King emerging with blood on his face and Clyke continuing to stab him. King passed away after expressing his love for his daughter while being transported to the hospital.
Apart from the murder case, Clyke was also sentenced last week for a separate incident involving a prison stabbing where the victim survived. He received a five-year sentence for aggravated assault and possessing a weapon, to be served concurrently with his life imprisonment for the murder in Nova Scotia.
