Nova Scotia’s Natural Resources Minister, Kim Masland, announced that her department has received a proposal for a golf development at West Mabou Beach Provincial Park. Masland expressed openness to considering development proposals in other protected areas while ensuring a balance between economic growth and environmental protection.
The proposal, submitted by the Cabot golf company, aims to establish an 18-hole golf course and a small office/clubhouse within the park’s boundaries near West Mabou Harbour. Despite this, the project does not include on-site accommodations. Masland emphasized the necessity for community and First Nations consultations before any decision on moving forward with the proposal.
Cabot’s persistence in seeking a Crown land lease for the project has sparked controversy, with previous attempts being rejected due to non-compliance with the Provincial Parks Act. Premier Tim Houston acknowledged discussing the project with local residents and Inverness MLA Kyle MacQuarrie, highlighting the need to explore new economic opportunities amid a significant deficit.
The proposal has drawn mixed reactions, with concerns raised by opposition parties regarding potential impacts on protected areas and community consultation processes. The debate underscores the challenges of balancing economic development with environmental conservation in Nova Scotia.
