A power disruption during the recent Nunavut election highlights the pressing need for infrastructure enhancements in the region, according to an incoming Nunavut MLA. On election night, Rankin Inlet residents faced intermittent power outages as Quilliq Energy Corporation addressed generator issues. Annie Tattuinee, the MLA-elect for Rankin Inlet South, aims to foster community expansion by advocating for improved infrastructure such as reliable power and water systems to accommodate growth.
Tattuinee emphasized that historical government investments in Nunavut did not adequately anticipate future community needs. Planning for the long term, she suggested that strategic infrastructure developments, like additional power plants or generators, should have been considered to support sustained growth and economic progress.
Moreover, Cecile Nelvana Lyall, the MLA-elect for Netsilik, echoed the call for infrastructure enhancement, particularly in power supply, across her constituency. Notably, the Qulliq Energy Corporation proposed the construction of a new power plant in Kugaaruk in 2024, responding to the rising population and energy demands in the area. The current power infrastructure, established in 1974, is increasingly challenging to maintain due to its age.
Lyall stressed the importance of advancing infrastructure projects to support anticipated housing growth in the region. With the upcoming assembly session in Iqaluit commencing on November 5, the newly elected MLAs will undergo orientation sessions and participate in the selection of the Speaker, premier, and ministers for the new legislative term.
