Welcome to our weekly newsletter featuring environmental trends and solutions that promote sustainability. Recently, Brett Bergmann from Solar Panda, an Ontario solar company, shared insights into their work in Africa. This aligns with a common theme observed among Ontario solar companies expanding into Africa.

This week’s highlights include Ontario’s impact on solar energy growth in Africa, the economic benefits of conservation, and the resurgence of fish populations in New Brunswick post the removal of a historical hydro dam.

The surge in solar technology adoption is influenced by various global events, such as disruptions in oil supply chains, leading to a shift towards renewable energy sources like solar panels. Notably, Africa witnessed a substantial 54% increase in solar installations in 2025, attracting Canadian companies like Solar Panda and JCM Power.

These companies originated in Ontario during the region’s solar industry boom driven by government incentives. However, changes in policy led to their expansion into emerging markets like Africa. Solar Panda now offers rent-to-own solar systems in multiple African countries, while JCM Power has utility-scale projects in Malawi, contributing significantly to the country’s electricity grid.

The removal of Ontario’s feed-in-tariff program in 2016 prompted these companies to explore new markets abroad. With a focus on Africa, they are now actively involved in providing solar solutions to regions lacking reliable electricity access.

This shift highlights how geopolitical and economic factors can drive the growth of renewable energy technologies globally. As Solar Panda and JCM Power continue to expand their operations in Africa, it underscores the potential for solar energy to flourish in regions previously untapped.

In another ecosystem, the removal of a hydroelectric dam in New Brunswick has led to a resurgence of fish populations in the St. Croix River, showcasing the positive impact of environmental conservation efforts. The restoration of natural habitats not only benefits biodiversity but also supports local communities dependent on these ecosystems for sustenance and cultural practices.

Through these examples, it is evident that environmental initiatives not only contribute to sustainability but also create economic opportunities and foster cultural restoration, emphasizing the interconnectedness of environmental conservation, economic growth, and societal well-being.
