Australian Paralympic gold medalist, Paige Greco, has passed away at the age of 28. The Australian Paralympic Committee and Australian cycling federation released a statement confirming her sudden death at her home in Adelaide due to a medical episode.
Greco’s mother, Natalie Greco, expressed the family’s deep sorrow, highlighting Paige’s kindness, determination, and the joy she brought into their lives. Despite the devastating loss, they are immensely proud of her representation of Australia.
Born with cerebral palsy, Greco made headlines by securing the first gold medal at the delayed Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, setting a new world record in the women’s C1-3 3,000-meter individual pursuit. She also achieved bronze medals in the road race and time trial events.
Throughout her career, Greco clinched numerous world championship titles and World Cup medals. She made a remarkable transition from Para athletics to cycling in 2019, where she set three world records and secured two gold medals and a silver at the track world championship.
Cameron Murray, the CEO of Paralympics Australia, mourned the loss of Greco, emphasizing her exceptional athletic prowess and extraordinary character. He praised her for not only her sporting achievements but also her ability to uplift and support those around her.
