Britney Spears has recently checked into a facility for substance abuse treatment following an incident where she was apprehended on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. A spokesperson for Spears informed The Associated Press that the 44-year-old pop icon voluntarily admitted herself to the facility. The incident occurred on March 5 when California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a BMW driving recklessly on U.S. 101 in Ventura County near the Los Angeles County border. After undergoing field sobriety tests, Spears was arrested for suspected impaired driving due to a mix of alcohol and drugs. She was subsequently detained at a county jail before being released a few hours later.
The case was transferred to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office on March 23, which is expected to determine charges against Spears before her court appearance scheduled for May 4. A spokesperson previously condemned Spears’s behavior as “completely unacceptable” and expressed hope that it would serve as a necessary catalyst for significant changes in her life. Spears has taken a step back from her music career, with no tours in nearly eight years and no new album releases for almost a decade.
Following the dissolution of a court-ordered conservatorship that had been in place for close to 14 years, Spears regained autonomy over her personal and financial decisions in 2021. Subsequently, she published a bestselling memoir titled “The Woman in Me” two years later. The conservatorship had been established shortly after Spears completed a month-long rehabilitation program in California back in 2007.
