Britney Spears, aged 44, faced charges in California for driving under the influence of a mix of drugs and alcohol, as confirmed by the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office. The pop star’s arrest followed an incident on U.S. 101 where she was driving her black BMW recklessly. Upon failing field sobriety tests, she was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and taken into custody. Spears, who has now sought substance abuse treatment, is due for arraignment on Monday.

The specific substances consumed by Spears were not detailed in the criminal complaint. After her arrest on March 4 and subsequent release on bail the next day, police concluded their investigation and passed the case to prosecutors on March 23. A spokesperson for Spears labeled her actions as “completely inexcusable” and hinted at the necessity for significant changes in her life.

Following the incident, Spears voluntarily entered a substance abuse treatment facility. Known for hits like “Toxic” and “Oops! … I Did It Again,” Spears rose to fame in the late ’90s and early 2000s. Her life has been under intense public scrutiny, particularly during her battles with mental health issues and the conservatorship under her father which ended in 2021. Despite a best-selling memoir and sporadic music releases, Spears has mostly withdrawn from the music scene in recent years.
