Quebec has extended the prohibition on open fires in many regions and restricted entry to certain forests to mitigate the wildfire hazard. Approximately 200 wildfires are currently active in the province, predominantly concentrated in its northern areas. The ban on open fires is now in effect in segments of the following regions: Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Capitale-Nationale, Côte-Nord, Lanaudière, Laurentides, Mauricie, Nord-du-Québec, Outaouais, and Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.
Moreover, forest access and traffic restrictions have been imposed in parts of Jamésie, including the Eeyou Istchee James Bay territory, and sections of Témiscamingue. These measures aim to safeguard public safety and curtail the potential for further wildfires, as stated by the province’s Ministry of Public Security.
In response to the escalating fire situation, SOPFEU has been bolstered by firefighting personnel from New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and British Columbia, who recently arrived in Quebec to provide assistance.
