Reggae Drummer Sly Dunbar of Sly and Robbie Duo Dies at 73

Renowned reggae drummer Sly Dunbar, a two-time Grammy Award winner known for his work with artists like Bob Marley and Bob Dylan, has passed away at the age of 73. His wife, Thelma, confirmed the news to the Jamaica Gleaner.

Dunbar, along with bassist Robbie Shakespeare, formed the iconic reggae duo Sly and Robbie, also called the Riddim Twins. They contributed to numerous reggae classics by artists such as Black Uhuru, Jimmy Cliff, and Peter Tosh, gaining international recognition from musicians like Grace Jones and the Rolling Stones.

Sly and Robbie collaborated with various artists, including Grace Jones, Serge Gainsbourg, and Bob Dylan, on multiple albums. Their musical influence was acknowledged by fellow musicians like Ali Campbell of UB40 and members of the Rolling Stones, who praised Dunbar’s pioneering contributions to reggae and dancehall rhythms.

With a rich musical legacy, Dunbar was part of the Revolutionaries and played on several notable albums, including works by Junior Murvin, Maxi Priest, and Bob Marley. Nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, Dunbar secured two wins for his contributions to Black Uhuru’s “Anthem” and Sly and Robbie’s “Friends.”

In 1980, Sly and Robbie established Taxi Records, a label that fostered talents like Shaggy, Shabba Ranks, and others. Known for his distinctive drumming style, Dunbar’s collaborations extended beyond reggae to artists like Joe Cocker, No Doubt, and Carly Simon, showcasing his versatility and impact on the music industry.
