Nick Reiner, the son of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner, is currently embroiled in a legal battle to access funds from a trust set up by his parents. The 32-year-old, facing charges for the alleged murder of his parents, has filed a petition in a Los Angeles court through his civil attorneys, claiming that the trustees have unjustly withheld the funds from him. The petition emphasizes that Nick, like any accused individual, deserves the right to a fair defense using his lawful resources.

The tragic incident involving Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, occurred on December 14, 2025, when they were fatally stabbed in their upscale Brentwood home. Following the incident, Nick Reiner was arrested and has since pleaded not guilty to the charges of double murder.

Despite initially securing the services of high-profile attorney Alan Jackson, Nick Reiner’s legal representation faced a setback when Jackson departed from the case for undisclosed reasons. The recent petition discloses that Nick’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, had initially agreed to cover Jackson’s fees but later reversed their decision.

The petition highlights that apart from the main Reiner family trust, individual trusts were established for Nick and his siblings, with clear instructions for disbursement. However, the filing reveals that Nick did not receive the funds earmarked for him at the age of 30, and the current trustee, Paul R. Kanin, has been unreasonably withholding the money based on unsubstantiated concerns about Nick’s competency.

According to the petition, the trust holds assets valued at around $1.5 million US, with Nick stressing the urgency of accessing the funds to support his defense and basic needs while in custody. The legal proceedings in Nick Reiner’s murder case are progressing slowly, with a pretrial hearing scheduled for September. Although he faces the possibility of the death penalty, the District Attorney’s office has yet to make a decision on seeking it.

The case has been shrouded in secrecy, with minimal information released about potential motives or autopsy details. Both sides have maintained a tight lid on leaks, leaving many crucial questions surrounding the tragedy unanswered. Despite the legal complexities, Nick Reiner’s family continues to grapple with the harrowing aftermath, describing the situation as an unbearable nightmare.

Rob Reiner, celebrated for his directorial contributions to iconic films like “This is Spinal Tap” and “A Few Good Men,” shared a lasting bond with Michele Singer, a talented photographer, whom he met during the production of “When Harry Met Sally.” Their enduring marriage of 36 years was tragically cut short by the horrific events of December 2025.
