Patricia Quinn, known for her role as Magenta in the original stage production and 1975 film adaptation of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” recently discovered the extensive fan base of the cult classic during the film’s 50th-anniversary tour across the U.S. and Canada. Quinn expressed her surprise at the overwhelming response from fans, citing the passionate and enthusiastic reception she receives at each tour stop.

The tour, named “The Rocky Horror Picture Show 50th Anniversary Spectacular,” made a stop in Vancouver on Oct. 1 and is set to visit Winnipeg, Toronto, and Kitchener, Ont. Quinn emphasized the incredible energy and excitement from fans, noting that their enthusiastic engagement motivates her to continue participating in these events.

The enduring popularity of “Rocky Horror” was further explored by cultural studies lecturer Cameron Crookston from the University of British Columbia, who highlighted the film’s continuous appeal over the past five decades. Crookston noted that the movie has become a significant cultural touchstone, particularly within the 2SLGBTQ+ community, due to its campy and sexually liberated aesthetic.

Despite its lasting impact, Crookston acknowledged that the film has its shortcomings, specifically in its portrayal of gender-related terms that are now considered outdated. He likened “Rocky Horror” to a historical reference, cautioning against viewing it as a contemporary guide to gender diversity.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” has garnered a dedicated following over the years, with fans participating in unique traditions such as dressing in costume, engaging in interactive screenings, and even performing live shadow casts alongside the film. Drag queen Shelita Cox, who has been involved in multiple live performances of the show, described the experience as both exhilarating and overwhelming, highlighting the film’s theme of radical acceptance and its resonance within the queer community.

Cox praised the film for its enduring message of self-acceptance and inclusivity, noting that it remains a rewarding and transformative viewing experience, whether enjoyed solo or with a lively audience. She expressed appreciation for the dynamic energy and engagement that audiences bring to each “Rocky Horror” performance, emphasizing the joy and positivity that characterizes these interactive screenings.
