Rugby Canada’s fundraising campaign, “Mission: Win Rugby World Cup 2025,” achieved remarkable success by surpassing its target and raising slightly over $1 million. The funds, combined with $2.6 million from the governing body, filled the gap in Canada head coach Kevin Rouet’s preparation strategy. Despite finishing as runners-up to top-ranked England in the final on September 27 at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium, the second-ranked Canadian women demonstrated strong performance.

The campaign, aimed at securing $1 million, garnered total proceeds and commitments amounting to $1.06 million from more than 1,500 donors, including community rugby clubs, the Canadian Rugby Foundation’s Monty Heald Fund, and generous individual donations. Coach Rouet expressed gratitude for the substantial support, emphasizing its positive impact both on and off the field, providing essential resources for their World Cup aspirations.

The raised funds facilitated two additional pre-tournament training camps, one in Chula Vista, Calif., preceding the Pacific Four Series in May, and another in Perth, Ont., in July before test matches in South Africa. Additionally, the financial assistance covered travel expenses, accommodation outside the World Cup, nutrition provisions, and enhanced medical and strength training support during the tournament.

CEO Nathan Bombrys commended the nationwide support that exceeded the fundraising goal, emphasizing the collective belief in the team’s journey and its significance for Canada. Despite the success, Coach Rouet acknowledged ongoing budget challenges for the Canadian team, stressing the continuous effort to maximize resources each year.

Looking ahead, Rouet anticipates leaner budget years post-2025, with the upcoming Rugby World Cup and the Olympics in 2027 and 2028, respectively. While acknowledging the financial constraints, he remains optimistic about the federation’s progress and future prospects, emphasizing the continual improvement witnessed during his tenure.

The achievements of the Canadian team are expected to pave the way for future opportunities, although the specific outcomes remain uncertain. The coach highlighted the evolving landscape of sport funding in Canada and emphasized the team’s resilience in navigating budgetary constraints.
