CBC Saskatchewan’s Creator Network provides a platform for young digital storytellers of diverse backgrounds to create original video content for CBC, sharing stories from their unique perspectives. The Mary Houston Bluebird Trail attracts volunteers of all ages every spring, spanning about 80 kilometers from Langham to Hanley in Saskatchewan.

Along the trail, there are nesting boxes placed every 400 meters, serving as vital habitats for migrating birds like bluebirds and tree swallows. This volunteer-led project, spearheaded by biologist Greg Fenty of the Saskatoon Young Naturalists, monitors the bird populations to track their productivity and survivorship over time.

The initiative aims to understand the changes in bluebird and tree swallow populations, which faced declines in the past due to habitat loss and pesticide use. Through hands-on experiences, volunteers learn to band birds, identify species, and observe the bird life cycle, fostering a deeper connection with nature.

Pi Srithammawut and his son Pacer, newcomers to Canada, joined the project to explore their new environment and appreciate nature’s wonders. The program not only educates but also sparks curiosity and interest in the natural world among participants, young and old alike.

Betty McBride, another volunteer, emphasized the enriching experience for her grandchildren, who have developed a keen interest in birds through their involvement. The project’s impact goes beyond the immediate volunteer work, inspiring individuals like Maycie McWillie to pursue careers in biology and conservation.

As volunteers eagerly await the upcoming monitoring and banding season, the project continues to engage participants in outdoor activities while promoting biodiversity education. The Mary Houston Bluebird Trail stands as a testament to the power of citizen science and community-driven conservation efforts.
