The study suggests that the AMOC system could slow by 51% by the year 2100 under a mid-range greenhouse gas emissions scenario, with a margin of error of plus or minus eight percentage points.

The potential consequences of a further slowdown or complete shutdown of the AMOC include abrupt impacts on global agriculture, food production, climate patterns, ecosystems, and rising sea levels. This could lead to significant challenges for Atlantic Canada, with implications such as more intense winter storms, changes in ocean currents, and impacts on marine life due to warmer waters.

Both experts, including Douglas Wallace, a professor of Oceanography at Dalhousie University, stress the need for more research and data collection on the AMOC to better understand and prepare for the potential outcomes. They emphasize the importance of taking decisive action to reduce the risks associated with climate change, highlighting the necessity of adhering to agreements like the Paris climate accord and transitioning away from fossil fuels.
