“Study Challenges Notion of Hungry Polar Bears Seeking Human Contact”

In Canada’s northern regions, an uptick in polar bear sightings near communities has been noted over the years. Researchers previously believed that these bears, forced on land due to diminishing sea ice, were hungry and possibly searching for food, including encounters with humans. However, a recent 11-year study conducted by experts from the University of Saskatchewan and University of Manitoba challenges this assumption.

The study, led by Douglas Clark from the U of S School of Environment and Sustainability, revealed surprising findings. Contrary to expectations, it wasn’t just emaciated bears seeking human contact; bears of all body conditions, ages, and sexes were more likely to be seen onshore the longer they stayed off the ice.

Using trail cameras in Wapusk National Park near Churchill, Manitoba, Clark and his team monitored over 500 polar bear visits, correlating sea ice measurements with human activity. The research, published in Arctic Science, indicated that the bears’ increased proximity to people was primarily due to climate change-induced sea ice reduction, compelling them to spend more time on land.

Although some bears were observed to be hungry, there was no evidence of predatory behavior towards humans. The study emphasized that while nutritional stress plays a role, it does not drive bears en masse towards communities as previously thought. Alex Crawford, a U of M assistant professor involved in the study, emphasized that starving polar bears remain dangerous if they encounter humans.

The research team plans to continue monitoring polar bears to assess potential shifts in behavior due to long-term changes in habitat and food availability. The ongoing project aims to provide valuable insights into the interactions between polar bears and human populations in the face of evolving environmental conditions.
