LISTEN | Exclusive interview with Swedish MEP Karin Karlsbro:

European lawmaker Karin Karlsbro believes actions are crucial in dealing with U.S. President Donald Trump, especially amidst the ongoing dispute over Greenland. Trump’s threats to take control of Greenland by force have sparked opposition from European leaders and Greenland residents.

The people of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, strongly oppose U.S. control. Denmark, a NATO ally of the U.S., has firmly rejected Trump’s advances. In response to European opposition, Trump has imposed a 10% tariff on eight EU member countries.

The European Union is now considering retaliatory measures, including utilizing the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), commonly referred to as the “trade bazooka.” This tool could restrict trade activities and public tenders, serving as a deterrent against U.S. coercion.

While EU members are divided on activating the “bazooka,” Karlsbro advocates for its use to send a strong message to Trump. She emphasizes the need for a credible response not only regarding Greenland but also any U.S. coercion attempts towards EU countries.

The ACI, akin to NATO’s Article 5 collective defense principle, symbolizes unity and collective action against external threats.

Hungary’s president and the Czech prime minister have not fully supported the EU’s stance on Greenland. Despite this, Karlsbro is confident in the EU’s ability to respond effectively, supported by strong backing within the EU and globally.

Karlsbro envisions the “trade bazooka” inflicting significant economic repercussions on the U.S., focusing on critical sectors to demonstrate the EU’s firm stance. She highlights the importance of standing up to U.S. coercion and protecting European interests.

While concerned about potential escalation, Karlsbro stresses the necessity of a firm EU response to Trump’s threats, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures over passivity.
