Thailand’s Queen Mother Sirikit, known for her grace and charm, passed away at the age of 93, as announced by the Thai Royal Household bureau. She had been out of the public eye since suffering a stroke in 2012.
Sirikit, the wife of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Thailand’s longest-reigning monarch, played a significant role alongside him for over seven decades. The royal couple, known for their philanthropic work, captured the hearts of the nation with their charitable endeavors.
Born in 1932 into a privileged family, Sirikit met King Bhumibol while studying in Paris. Despite initial reservations, their love blossomed, leading to their engagement in 1949 and marriage a year later.
Renowned for her elegance, Sirikit collaborated with renowned fashion designer Pierre Balmain to promote Thai silk and traditional weaving practices. Together with the king, she spearheaded development projects in rural areas, showcasing their efforts on national television.
Her influence extended beyond charity work, with her birthday declared a national holiday and her involvement in political matters, notably supporting the People’s Alliance for Democracy. Despite occasional political engagements, she will be remembered fondly for her humanitarian contributions and maternal qualities.
Queen Mother Sirikit leaves behind her son, King Maha Vajiralongkorn, and three daughters, marking the end of an era in Thai history.
