Unlike other transit services in the area, the West Coast Express typically operates only on weekdays, with limited runs throughout the day. The operational constraints of the service stem from funding and governance issues, with TransLink leasing the rail tracks from Canadian Pacific Kansas City.
Although there have been discussions about expanding the WCE service, various factors, including the need to balance freight and passenger services, have hindered significant progress. Despite the slow post-pandemic recovery rate of the West Coast Express, there is a focus on other transit priorities such as SkyTrains, buses, and bus depots.
While extending the WCE service to Chilliwack was promised by the NDP in the past, current priorities are directed towards other transit projects. However, there is optimism in improving transit services north of Metro Vancouver, with interests in connecting communities along Highway 99 to the transit system.
